The honest headline: A well-planned vegan diet can be one of the cheapest ways to eat well in the United States, but only if you build it around dry beans, whole grains, tofu, oats, and frozen produce rather than plant-based…
Honest headline: The cheapest low-calorie meals are also the most filling ones because volume, water, protein, and fiber, not price, drive satiety. Broth-based soups, oats, eggs, canned tuna, frozen vegetables, and bulk brown rice hit both goals at once.
Honest headline: The paleo diet is one of the more expensive eating patterns because it centers on meat, seafood, eggs, nuts, and produce while excluding the cheapest calories in the American grocery store (rice, beans, oats, pasta).
Consult your physician, pharmacist, or registered dietitian before starting a diet aimed at lowering blood pressure, especially if you take antihypertensive medication (ACE inhibitors, ARBs, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, thiazide diuretics), potassium-sparing drugs (spironolactone, amiloride), lithium, or NSAIDs.
Short answer: A 1200-calorie Mediterranean diet applies the traditional Mediterranean pattern (olive oil, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fish, moderate dairy, minimal red meat) inside a short-term weight-loss cap.

About this collection
This category collects our budget meal plans, seven-day menus built to feed one person for roughly $30 to $50 per week without giving up macro balance. Coverage includes 1,200-calorie budget, budget keto, cheap vegan for $30 a week, low-calorie meals under $5 per day, DASH on a budget, and paleo on $40.
Every budget plan is priced against a national grocery average (Aldi and Walmart baseline, with a Kroger comparison for produce) and recalculated when staple prices shift. Nutrition is calculated per meal against the Nutritionix database and USDA FoodData Central. Plans still hit protein at or above 0.8 g/kg body weight, fiber above 25 g, and sodium under 2,300 mg per day, so cheap does not mean nutrient-thin.
Budget plans are structured by a Registered Dietitian on our team (Brenda Peralta, Kerly Cordova, Marita Radloff, or Karolina Peterova), medically reviewed by Franco Cuevas, MD, and cooked and tested by our Food Editor Damla Sengul. If a price or macro looks off, tell us at social@dietsmealplan.com.
